Frequently, historians want access to circulation data. This is not easy to get but contemporary circulation data for many papers can be found at the Audit Bureau of Circulation's website. The ABC's historical data reaches back as far as 1914 but is only available to Audit Bureau members.

The Society for the History of Authorship, Reading & Publishing (SHARP) has a list of research tools relating to the history of the book and other published materials. Not all of the resources are freely available and some links have not been updated, so ask me if you need help accessing something.
