Lowe was known for her high society creations. In fact, she only designed for women who were on the social register. She only worked for the best families. "I've been as careful about the people I work for as any social climber," she told one interviewer. "I don't design many dresses, so I have to be selective." She created gowns for debutantes and society brides for leading families such as the Roosevelts, the Du Ponts, Lodges, Auchincloses and the Hamiltons. Lowe was a native of Montgomery, Ala., born to Janey Cole (a dressmaker) and Jack Lowe. In 1912, she married Lee Cohen and gave birth to her son, Arthur Lee, who was her business partner until his death in 1958. From 1919 to 1928, she operated a dress-making salon in Tampa, Fla., under the name Anne Cohen. She came to New York in 1929. She studied and continued to create original designs for her own salon for Hattie Carnegie, Henri Bendel, Neiman Marcus, I. Magnin and Martha's.
