French Literature

Background

This section merges three distinct yet often overlapping genres. According to The Oxford Dictionary of Science Fiction, science fiction is when "the setting differs from our own world (e.g. by the invention of new technology, through contact with aliens, by having a different history, etc.)" and the differences can be "explained (explicitly or implicitly) in scientific or rational, as opposed to supernatural, terms." In contrast, fantasy is "a genre of literature in which magic or the supernatural is portrayed as being real" (Prucher 2006), whereas the adventure genre involves a hero's epic and dangerous journey to a distinct place (Schoenberg and Trudeau 2008).
