According to the The Oxford Dictionary of Science Fiction, the horror genre instills feelings of fear, terror, or dread in the reader (Prucher 2006). The list below captures books in that category, in addition to books that contain elements of the "fantastique"—a French literary term that denotes the emergence of supernatural elements in an otherwise realistic narrative. The works below mostly consist of novels from the eighteenth century onwards. There will be significant crossover with other genres in this guide such as science fiction, fantasy, and adventure; romance, folk and fairy tales, and drama.
