French Literature

Background

This section features a selection of French chivalric romances, which were popular in noble courts of the High Middle Ages and early modern Europe. As defined by The Oxford Dictionary of Literary Terms, chivalric romances depict "the adventures of legendary knights, and [celebrate] an idealized code of civilized behaviour that combines loyalty, honour, and courtly love" (Baldick 2015). Written in many different languages including English, French, Spanish, Italian, and more, romances swept through courts as the popular tales of the times. Themes of the works below include heroic journeys, courtly love (defined here), and faithfulness in adversity.
