French Literature

Background

Deserving of its own section is the literary genre of French Crime Fiction (Romans Policiers in French, translating to "Detective Novels.")  Émile Gaboriau, often referred to as the father of detective fiction, published his novel Monsieur Lecoq in 1868. The novel is named after its protagonist and is a young policeman solving the murder of three men in Paris. The novel is the first in a series about Lecoq and went on to inspire famous British mystery novelist Arthur Conan Doyle. Since then, the genre is still flourishing in France, with many popular Roman Policers being published in the last decade.
