WorldCat is a union catalog that searches across the collections of many libraries both in the U.S. and worldwide. There is both a subscription version of the catalog from FirstSearch, as well as a freely available web version. However, WorldCat does not list the holdings of all international collections and archives, so researchers are encouraged to also explore the individual catalogs and finding aids of relevant institutions.
OCLC FirstSearch catalog includes citations for books, journals, manuscripts, maps, music scores, sound recordings, films, computer files, newspapers, slides, videotapes, archival material, etc., in libraries around the world.
The Library of Congress uses standardized subject headings that can help with a search on specific topics in UC Library Search. Some examples related to Science Fiction are provided below. The following can also be found in individual catalog records.
The best way to search for books is to use the Library Catalog to identify relevant titles and locations/call numbers. However, for browsing on open Library shelves, it can also be useful to know relevant call number ranges from the Library of Congress Classification system. Other titles will be in different locations, especially books on specific directors, studios, etc.
