Example Citations

Cartographic

The examples use The Chicago Manual of Style Online 17th edition because it does not require a particular order of elements and is often a good citation style for archival, manuscript, or photograph collections, however, the citations should be consistent in their order.

Maps

Footnote Structure: 

1. Cartographer's First Name Last Name, Title of Map, Scale [if given], Title of Collection. Title of Library,  Publication Date, accessed Access Date, URL. 

Shortened Structure:

2. Lastname, Title of Map, Date.

Bibliography Structure

Cartographer's Last Name, First Name. Title of Map, Scale [if given], Title of Collection. Title of Library,  Publication Date, accessed Access Date, URL. 

  ¡ Maps often have corporate authors instead of individual authors. In this case, you do not invert the name in the bibliography entry.  

Footnote Example

1. Bridwell's Map of Los Angeles, Henry J. Bruman Map Collection. UCLA Digital Library Collections, 1930/1939, https://digital.library.ucla.edu/catalog/ark:/21198/zz002c1hn5.

  • cartographer (if known)
  • title of the map (in italics) or a description (in roman)
  • scale and size (if known)
  • publication details or location of the map 
  • undated maps consulted online should include an access or revision date
