Finding Images

The following databases are licensed resources available to UCLA users only.  Additional image databases are listed under Image Research.

Many general and subject specific databases can be used to locate images in periodicals or other publications. In addition to the databases listed below, consider reviewing the list of Databases by Subject.

Print indexes help locate reproductions of images in books and periodicals.  Examples include:

In the UCLA Library Catalog, to limit searches to illustrated books, go to the Advanced Search page, enter a subject search term, then type the keyword "illustrations" in the second search box.

Subjects used in the library catalog to describe illustrated books often include the terms 'pictorial works'. Examples:

Graphic arts -- Pictorial works
Commercial art -- Pictorial works

To find representations of particular subjects in art, the library subject headings include 'in art'. Examples:

Trees in art
Women in art
