Latinx and Chicanx Film and Television

A series of film screenings and filmmaker conversations, film restorations, online content, educational initiatives, and a publication exploring the shared influences of Latino and Latin American filmmakers and the work they created or presented in Los Angeles during the past half-century. Includes Oral Histories where the Academy conducted thirteen original Visual History interviews with prominent Latino, Latin American and Chicano filmmakers. Recuerdos de un cine en español: Latin American Cinema in Los Angeles, 1930-1960 was a public program series, held at the Billy Wilder Theater in the Hammer Museum in 2017-2018, that surveyed significant Latin American cinema. This series featured a number of new film restorations undertaken by the Archive and supporting institutions. Several titles from this series are available for viewing through the Film & Television Archive Research and Study Center. The book Cinema Between Latin America and Los Angeles represents scholarly output influenced by this public program.

From Latin America to Hollywood is centered on a period that began with the social, cultural, and political environment of the 1960s that sparked the Chicano and New Latin American cinema movements and extends to the present day. More programming information can be found here.

In April 2017, the International Federation of Film Archives organized a symposium which brought together scholars and film archivists from all of Latin America, Spain, and the United States to discuss the many issues surrounding the creation of Hollywood's 'Cine Hispano.' The papers presented in this two-day symposium are collected and revised here.
