With his houses flooded with light, Austria-American architect Richard J. Neutra (1892-1970) shaped the scene of Californian Modernism. Author Barbara Lamprecht fills this gap by studying the extensive but little known furniture range that had faded into obscurity until Dion Neutra, Neutra's son and architectural partner, started work on the designs with German manufacturer VS, whose ties to Modernism date back to the Deutscher Werkbund. Referring to the original sketches and patent drawings, the author focused on the details of the designs to show the furniture's role in creating the balanced environments that Neutra intended for his clients. Each element: furniture, lighting, building, Nature, and landscape all worked together as a "Gesamtwerk" (a complete expression) to create a "sensorium," or a "soul anchorage," as Neutra called those environments best suited to human well-being.

One of the key figures in modern architecture, Luis Barragán's (1902-88) influence has travelled far beyond his Mexican homeland, culminating in his reception of architecture's most prestigious award, the Pritzker Prize, in 1980. Inspired by the vernacular style of his native country, his passion for Moorish architecture and desire for spiritual beauty and harmony with nature, he set about creating serenity and enchantment in his buildings and gardens. Photographer René Burri visited Barragán and photographed his work on several trips to Mexico in the 1960s and 70s.

This book includes a great number of exquisite visual representations, thereby presenting a complete treatment of Barragan that enhances an understanding of the equally poetic and architectonic nature of his work and places him within the historical and political context of Mexico. It also features the most extensive documentation available on Barragan. Luis Barrag n: His House offers a complete visual tour of the house and studio, as well as the superb garden that surrounds it. Hitherto unpublished documents and images in the possession of the Fundaci n de Arquitectura Tapata and other collectors place the work in the context of Barragán's career. The entire house has been specially photographed for this volume, with meticulous attention being given to the treatment of color and light so essential to Barragán's work.

Criticised in his own time for having no identifiable style, Saarinen developed a remarkable range of work, which depended on colour, form and materials. Saarinen showed a marked dependence on innovative structures and sculptural forms, but not at the cost of pragmatic considerations. He moved back and forth freely between the International Style and Expressionism, utilizing a vocabulary of curves and cantilevered forms, some of which have remained in production and became twentieth century furniture icons. A full illustrated chronology of all the featured works completes each volume.

Throughout his career Eero Saarinen divided his time between architecture and design. He designed some of the most important post-Second World War buildings in America and his objects are absolute icons of contemporary design.

The architect, Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992), has long been considered one of the major modern architects of the twentieth century in Brazil. Her iconic Museum of Art of São Paulo (1968), and the bold, Social Service for Commerce Building-Pompéia, São Paulo (1986), have gained recognition in recent years and her reputation is beginning to be acknowledged internationally. Bo Bardi's major writings on architecture, however, have not been translated, and are not well known. This book contains the first English-language translation of Propeadeutic Contribution to the Teaching of Architecture Theory, (Habitat, Ltd. São Paulo, 1957), a seminal text, published in Portuguese by the Italo-Brazilian Bo Bardi. It is arguably the first published writing on architecture theory by a practicing woman architect.

Spanish architect and designer, Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926) was an important and influential figure in the history of contemporary Spanish art. His use of colour, application of a range of materials and the introduction of organic forms into his constructions were an innovation in the realm of architecture. His completed works (the Casa Batllo, 1905-1907 and the Casa Mila, 1905-1910) and his incomplete works (the restoration of the Poblet Monastery and the Retable d'Alella in Barcelona) illustrate the importance of this philosophy. His furniture designs were conceived with the same philosophy, as shown, for example, in his own office (1878) or the lamps in the Placa Reial in Barcelona. The Sagrada Familia (1882-1926) was a monumental project which eventually took over his life (it was still incomplete at the time of his death).

For almost ten years, Samuel Mockbee, a recent MacArthur Grant recipient, and his architecture students at Auburn University have been designing and building striking houses and community buildings for impoverished residents of Alabama's Hale County. Using salvaged lumber and bricks, discarded tires, hay and waste cardboard bales, concrete rubble, colored bottles, and old license plates, they create inexpensive buildings that bear the trademark of Mockbee's work, which he describes as "contemporary modernism grounded in Southern culture."
