Creating and Sharing Video Clips

Finding Videos

  1. Visit YouTube.com and search for videos by keyword.
  2. Click on “More” below the video to see license information about the video.

  1. If the video is licensed with a “Standard YouTube License,” video clips cannot be made from the video. To share these videos, see the "Sharing Videos" steps below.
  2. If licensed with a “Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed),” video clips can be created and shared. Skip to the "Creating Video Clips" steps below.

Sharing Videos

  1. Click the “Share” button below the video’s title.
  2. Type the time when you would like the video to start.

  1. You can share the video four different ways:
    • Click on one of the social media links to share the video on a networking site like Facebook or LinkedIn
    • Click on Embed to see code you can copy and paste for embedding the video in other websites
    • Click on Email and fill out the form to email the video with a message. 
    • Copy the video’s short URL (starts with http://youtu.be).

Creating Video Clips

You can create video clips of videos that have been uploaded to YouTube with a Creative Commons license.

  1. Log into your Google account if you are not already logged in. (You will have to create and log into a Google account to create video clips.)
  2. Click on the “Remix this video” link below the video.

  1. Find the part of the video you would like to make the start of the clip and pause the video. (If the beginning of your clip is the beginning of the video, ignore this step and skip to step 12.)
  2. Click on the blue scissors icon on the timeline below the video to split the video at the start of the clip.

  1. Find the part of the video you would like to make the end of the clip and pause the video.
  2. Click on the blue scissors icon on the timeline to split the video at the end of the clip. The video should now be divided into two or three sections.
  3. On the timeline, hover over the sections of the video that you do not want in your clip.
  4. Press the “x” to delete these sections until only your clip remains.
  5. Click “Publish” on the top right of the browser. The video clip may take a few minutes to publish.
  6. Click on the edit (pencil) icon on the left below the video player to name the video and add a description.
  7. Click either of the “Save changes” buttons on the bottom right or top right of the page.

Sharing Video Clips

  1. The fastest way to share a video from YouTube is to include in an email, website or document the URL of the YouTube page.

Finding Creative Commons Videos on YouTube

Only videos that have been uploaded to YouTube with a Creative Commons license can be edited into clips.Through YouTube’s “Creator Studio,” you can more quickly find Creative Commons videos to edit and share.

  1. Visit YouTube’s video editor, Creator Studio (www.youtube.com/editor).
  2. Sign in to your Google account if you are not already signed in. You will have to be signed in to use the video editor.
  3. Click on the Creative Commons icon to search by keyword for videos uploaded to YouTube with a Creative Commons license.  (YouTube allows editing of only videos you have uploaded or videos others have uploaded with a Creative Commons license.)
