Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Data and Tutorials

Building upon urban studies of public policy and planning's roles in the formation of the barrio, we turn our attention to how suburban forms operate in a multiracial and metropolitan context. This interactive map displays student investigations into how Chicano/a and Latino/a populations have impacted the economic, social, and spatial contours of suburbs in Greater Los Angeles

The City and the Library is a lower-division composition class that trains students in research and writing, all the while asking them to engage the city around them through direct encounter and library research. The capstone of the class requires students to work directly with the Library’s archives, touching and pondering evidence of the city past. This website houses images of those archival artifacts as well as the students’ annotations of the material, cross-referenced by subject and geography. It represents a collaboration between UCLA Writing Programs and the UCLA Library. The class began in Fall 2013, the digital project in Fall 2015; both are ongoing.

This collaborative digital project is assembling data and publishing visualizations about dozens of social movements that have influenced American life and politics during the 20th century, including radical movements, civil rights movements, labor movements, women's movements, and more.
