Social Welfare

Step 1 map out the information your need

Before your search

  1. Think of different keywords that might have been used to describe your population group (e.g. Black, African American)
  2. Similarly think of synomous and related descriptive phases that capture the issues or conditions you are interested in learning more about. E.g. economic or financial
  3. Lastly, come up with search words related to legislation or policy (if you have one in mind already) or use policy or program or assistance, ...

Tips:

  1. At least skim through the abstracts or the full-text as you find relevant items so you can gather more relevant name of advocates, search terms, specific legislation or programs based on specific policy.
  2. Utilize a bibliography management service such as Zotero (https://guides.library.ucla.edu/zotero) to not only capture bibliographic citation for your in-text citation and bibliography but also build up a digital library for future research projects on the same topic.
  3. You are likely to find a lot on the federal level legislation. Focus on the questions listed in your assignment and what is still missing to answer the questions to your satisfaction.

Looking for background information?

A web search can be a good strating point if you are still learning problems or issues your population faces.

The same for newspapers search. Major Dailies include the big ones. Access World News has more California newspapers. While there are ways to narrow down your newspaper article search, not all of them offer a way to only include longer articles (which usually entails an investigative reports or feature articles).

Depending on your topic, Congressional Research Service reports can offer an advanced introduction to a topic of interest to Member of Congress and their high-level staff.  The most comprehensive way to look for this type report sis through ProQuest's modules (http://bit.ly/1pcTkaT) that we have been purchasing.
