Welcome

Welcome to the UCLA Library Guide to researching Black art and artists. The focus of this guide is on Black art and artists in the English-speaking diaspora. It was created by Library Student Research Assistant Amy Fleming, an MLIS student in UCLA's Graduate School of Education and Information Science.

Below you can find some related subject guides to supplement your research.

Finding Resources

A "Subject" search can be a useful way to navigate a catalog when looking for resources on a specific topic. Below are some examples of subject headings that may be useful in your searches in UC Library Search.

  • African American art
  • African American arts
  • African American artists
  • African American sculptors
  • African American painting
  • African diaspora in art
  • Art, Black
  • Arts, Black — History

Subject searches can also be used for specific artists. Some examples are listed below.

  • Ringgold, Faith
  • Ringgold, Faith — Exhibitions
  • Ringgold, Faith — Criticism and Interpretation

However, the most comprehensive search can be done using the artist's name in the keyword search box. The most effective way to do this is to use quotation marks to search the name as a phrase, e.g. "Faith Ringgold". While this search will find books about Faith Ringgold, it will also include chapters of books where she is mentioned and exhibition catalogs of both solo and group shows.

Connecting from Off-Campus: VPN and Proxy Tutorials

The Library's online subscription resources can always be accessed from computers and wireless networks on campus. However, off-campus access is restricted to current UCLA, students, faculty, and staff who have set up their computer using one of the methods below. Click on the other tabs to see how four Bruins got their computers set up and ready to go for remote access!
