"Data is obtained from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to compile the report which highlights the vital role patents play in university research and innovation. The report, which has been published each year since 2013 by the NAI and IPO, collects the rankings by calculating the number of utility patents granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office which list a university as the first assignee on the printed patent." The Regents of the University of California is the highest-ranking university, continuing at #1 in this ranking.

The ranking includes S&P 100 companies and their global patent assets on January 2, 2020. Subsidiaries with patent assets are also included. A patent family includes filings of the same invention by the same applicant in multiple countries or jurisdictions."
