Cataloging Training for the Clark Library: Location codes

Basic guidelines for searching and creating catalog records

Clark Locations (049)

Books, manuscripts, and prints are stored in various locations around the Clark Library. When cataloging, it's important to indicate where the item will be kept so that the Reader Services staff can easily find materials when it's paged. We indicate location in the 049 field.

049 __ CLUW = clark library

CLUW [*] = rare books (this includes everything written by Oscar Wilde, no matter the year of publication)

[f] CLUW [*] = rare oversized books (28 cm-44 cm)

[ff] CLUW [*] = rare elephant folios (45 cm or longer)

CLUW |ockrf = reference books

Note: there are other ways to subdivide and refine locations within the call number (090 or 099) field.
