A Doll's House (dir. Joseph Losey, 1973)

Nora Helmer (Jane Fonda) lives a quiet life with her husband, Torvald (David Warner), in a small Norwegian town. While he works diligently at a bank, she looks after their children. But Torvald doesn't know that several years ago, when he was very ill and she was desperate for money, Nora forged a loan document and has been secretly working to pay the money back ever since. The arrival of her friend Kristine (Delphine Seyrig) prompts Nora to re-evaluate her life and confront Torvald. Based on the play by Henrik Ibsen.

Hedda Gabler (dir. Paul Willis, 2004)

Set in an anonymous corner of suburbia, this contemporary adaptation of Ibsen’s play is a shattering exploration of ambition, domestic power and gender roles. Just married, Hedda Gabler and her husband arrive at their new home where Hedda’s romantic rival from the past appears. Hedda must confront her desire for a life lived beautifully and without compromise - whatever the cost. This bracing dramatization brings new dimensions to Hedda Gabler’s character.
