Toward Ethical and Inclusive Descriptive Practices at the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library

The Clark Library is revising our cataloging practices, checking records for accuracy and to eliminate, whenever possible, language that is biased or racist. We are updating metadata especially in instances when the historical narrative needs to be challenged or when greater social context needs to be included.

Literature at the Clark Library

The William Andrews Clark Memorial Library holdings include a wide variety of literary rare books, as well as manuscripts relating to specific authors and poets. While materials representing a broad spectrum of periods and genres may be found, the principal collecting areas are the Early Modern Period, long 18th century, Oscar Wilde and other 19th-century English and American authors, forgeries and fakes, and works in translation.

Quick tips

  • Visit UC Library Search to search by author, title, or keyword.  If you have too many search results, try more specific search terms or limiting your search by date to find a specific edition.
  • Significant literature holdings can also be found at Library Special Collections, with particular strengths in nineteenth and twentieth-century English and American literature. LSC materials are also discoverable in UC Library Search.
