This Ph.D. dissertation, discusses the history, repertory, production, casts, finances, etc., of various young black theater companies active in the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas primarily in the 1960s. Appendices contain transcripts of interviews with founders/directors of and participants in the theater groups, and copies of playbills, newspaper reviews, photographs, etc., as follows: Appendix, v. I: Ebony Showcase Theatre, Inner City Cultural Center, Performing Arts Society of Los Angeles; Appendix, v. II: Watts Writers Workshop, Aldridge Players/West; Appendix, v. III: The Group, North Richmond Theatre Workshop, Dialogue Black/White.

History of the Works Progress Administration's Federal Theatre project in Los Angeles in the years 1933-1939. Includes appendices containing lists of newspaper reviews of plays, list of plays presented, a chronology of the plays by venue, and a classification of the types of drama performed. During its short existence form 1935–1939, the Federal Theatre Project (FTP) of the Works Progress Administration boasted some great successes, but in the face of criticism was found unworthy of continuation by its founders, thereby setting the terrible precedent in this country of viewing the arts as expendable. This dissertation explores the compelling history of the Los Angeles FTP's birth and death–a story filled with more than its share of heroes and villains.

Dissertation (Ph.D)--California State University, Northridge, 1979.
The purpose of this study was to investigate and compile information on feminist theatre in the Los Angeles area during the last decade. The study includes a brief background of the women's movement and its influence on the rise of feminist theatre. The characteristics of feminist theatre, including form, content, audience relationship and process are discussed. This thesis includes an examination of a representative sampling of feminist theatre groups in the Los Angeles area and their productions, as well as some of the women involved in them.

Is there multicultural theater in Los Angeles? If so, who is involved? If not, why? Can the identity or nature of diversity in Los Angeles theater be identified? The primary resources examined were publications that advertise the presentation of theater in Los Angeles. The approach was to catalogue every play announcement printed in these sources. The next level of examination emerged by subdividing advertisements by play topics covered, genre or style of plays produced, specific plays produced, specific artists that wrote, produced, or were involved in the productions, and location of performances or theater houses. The final component of the approach was to interview as many of the major players involved with ethnically diverse theater. Each interview had similar questions pertaining to the theater company's organizational structure, methodology, and mission statement.

This dissertation uses critical theories of performance to examine contemporary Latina/o plays and performances in Los Angeles in order to provide an important critical paradigm for dealing with issues of identity and the artistic self-representation of community, once considered an ethnic minority, but which is fast becoming a majoritarian social a political municipal force. Through an exploration of the textual and performative strategies employed in Latina/o Theater and Performance I illustrate the ways in which these works function as a means of cultural transmission, transcultural identity building, revisionist histories and social and political acts of resistance.

This dissertation explores black cultural politics in Los Angeles between 1943 and 1973, arguing that cultural struggles constituted a primary means by which African Americans imagined new concepts of community, battled to transform urban conditions, and helped to fundamentally alter the parameters of cultural life in Southern California. In doing so, it seeks to broaden the spatial and temporal parameters commonly associated with the black arts movement, even as it strives to demonstrate the impossibility and undesirability of insisting upon a solitary movement as such.

Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Wayne State University, 1993.
This dissertation explores how LAAT/LATC evolved as a major arts organization. Using the LAAT/LATC organizational structure, mission statement and organizational goals as guides, the study will attempt to determine how effectively the LAAT/LATC realized its goals and objectives, from the inaugural season of 1975 through the final crises year of 1991. The study will also set the development of the LAAT/LATC into historical perspective, defining movements which have influenced the development of the theatre, including the emerging resident professional theatre movement and the development of cultural pluralism in the American theatre arena.
