Connect from Off-Campus or via Wireless On-Campus

Most of the links on these pages go to subscription sources which are accessible from any computer on campus. All campus wireless networks (eduroam, UCLA_WIFI, or UCLA_WEB) provide access to online subscription content.

UCLA students, faculty, and staff can access these sites from off-campus using either the Bruin Online Proxy Server (a simple setting in your browser) or the UCLA VPN Client (a program you install on your computer). To set up an iPAD, follow the instructions for the iPhone. You can also get access through UCLA mobile. Off-campus access will require Multi-Factor Authentication in addition to a Bruin ID and Password.

[NOTE: If you are using a Mac, you may need to use Chrome or Firefox, not Safari, to read some of the pdf material.]

COVID-19: Library Information, Resources, & Print Access

As part of UCLA's transition to remote instruction, and the Library's necessary decision to close all Library locations, access to print resources and special collections is not available. Please take advantage of electronic resources such as ebooks and article databases. The UCLA community can connect to these online resources off-campus via the VPN or proxy server. Interlibrary loan is still available for electronic journal articles; however, ebooks cannot be borrowed on interlibrary loan. You can also temporarily access digitized print books via HathiTrust, although you cannot download or print these books--only do screenshots.

The library is also extending access to our print collection beyond what's available in HathiTrust through the Pilot Emergency Temporary Digititzation on Request Service (PETDOR). Please review the PETDOR FAQ for guidance on using this service.

For help with any of our resources, please schedule an appointment with a librarian (audio/video Zoom appointments available), contact your subject librarian directly, or use our 24/7 chat service.

Made to Stick

The book you need for your class, Made to Stick, by Chip Heath, may be accessed online at these two sites. You may need to create an account, but that does not cost anything.

To Google or Not to Google?

The Internet has brought a vast array of information to your desktop.  The challenge for students is to identify the relevant sources, get to them easily, and critically evaluate their content.  Some of the websites listed on the other tabs in this guide are licensed for UC users only, others are open to all.  Those that are licensed will not turn up in a Google search.

Some of the resources listed on the Online Resources page will be useful for the Film Review assignment if you are in Prof. Miller's sections. Others can be used for the Persuasive Speech assignment.

This guide will lead you to resources that can help you find material for your assignments. Remember that you can always ask a reference librarian for help.

Major Communication Journals

These major journals are not included in CIOS. The catalog will link to an online version if we have access to it. Otherwise you can look at the print issues in the library.
