New Journal Issue Alerts

In the print world, researchers can browse new issues of journals on a shelf. This isn’t always easy to do in the case of electronic journals, making the ability to set up alerts a useful tool for the discovery of new research. UCLA subscribes to a number of e-journal packages from different vendors that typically provide an e-mail-based table of contents alerting service, and/or the option of setting up RSS feeds for specific titles. RSS feeds can often be saved as favorites on your desktop, or via a feed reader with more advanced options. Below are some of the major vendors offering e-journals in Film, Television, and Media Studies.

Project Muse

Project Muse is an online publisher of current University Press journals from a number of presses, with an emphasis on the humanities. You may sign up for e-mail alerts when the latest issue of journals you select is published (you will receive a link to the journal issue). Alternatively, you can sign up for RSS feeds linking to latest issues that will show up in a reader or in the “favorites” section of your browser. Project Muse tends to add new titles annually, so it is useful to watch for new journals available from the service you may want to add to your list. Note that some journals in Muse are now “Archive Only,” meaning that the title has switched to another vendor and there will be no more alerts through this database.

Journals of interest available from Muse: Advertising & Society, Cinema Journal, Discourse, Film & History, Film History, Framework, The Moving Image, PAJ, Velvet Light Trap, GLQ, American Quarterly, Canadian Review of American Studies, boundary 2, Cultural Critique, Postmodern Culture, Technology and Culture, Callaloo, Biography, Arizona Quarterly, Criticism, New Literary History, Black Camera, Journal of Film and Video, Mechademia, Music Sound and the Moving Image, Science Fiction Film and Television

JSTOR Current Issues

Although primarily offering back issues, JSTOR hosts a small set of journals with current issues, particularly UC Press. Media studies journals with current content include Black Camera, Film History, Film Quarterly, and Journal of Film and Video. If you sign up for MyJSTOR, you can use journal tracking tools such as RSS feeds and table of contents by e-mail.

Taylor & Francis Journals

T&F is a commercial online journal and database provider for numerous academic disciplines. To sign up for e-mail alerts to new journal issues from Taylor & Francis, register on their site and select titles from the “Journals” list. Keep in mind that although you can sign up for table of contents from any journal, UCLA may not necessarily subscribe to it.
