Diasporas: Transnational Migrations, Spaces, and Identities

Presented by UCLA Library's International & Area Studies Department

Fall 22_version 1

Despite modern border restrictions, there has always been a history of movements across the globe and connections between geographic regions and their peoples. This reading list highlights diasporic communities–large and small–from around the world and our collections related to them. It features not only well-known groups and countries (e.g., immigrants to the US) but also other communities we might not normally think of. It includes scholarly, non-fiction, and fictional works that explore the different reasons for migration and convey the varied experiences of migrants and their descendants, both as whole groups and individuals. These books also show how migration often lead to the negotiation, transformation, and/or evolution of migrants' identities and senses of belonging and home.
