Philosophy in Library Special Collections

UCLA Professor of Law Emeritus Benjamin Aaron's principal field of study was labor law and industrial relations with a special emphasis on comparative labor law. Collection contains files concerning the UCLA Ad Hoc Committee chaired by Aaron to examine three allegations against Acting Assistant Professor of Philosophy, Angela Y. Davis.

John Elof Boodin (1869-1950) was professor of philosophy at Grinnell College (1900-4), University of Kansas (1904-13), Carleton College (1913-28), and UCLA (1928-39). He also served as president of the American Philosophical Association, Western Division (1932-33). The collection includes correspondence, lecture notes, manuscripts, student term papers, printed material, memorabilia, and photographs.

Rudolf Carnap (1891-1970) was born in Germany. He was one of the developers of theories of symbolic logic (1920s-1930s), a leader in the field of logical empiricism and the first to apply mathematical logic to scientific language. The collection consists of correspondence, audio tapes of lectures, notebooks, literary manuscripts (some unpublished), corrected galleys, books, and periodicals.

Paul Friedländer (1882-1968) was a professor of classics at UCLA in the 1940s. The collection contains Friedländer's correspondence, notes, manuscripts, and printed items including materials for his Studien zur antiken Literatur und Kunst, notes on Plato, books, hard-bound periodicals, offprints and pamphlets from the Friedländer library, and manuscripts of his wife, Charlotte.

Henry Fitzgerald Heard (October 6, 1889-August 14, 1971) was interested in parapsychology, Vedanta, philosophy, and religion. He took honors in history at Cambridge, 1911, where he also did his postgraduate work in philosophy of religions. He lectured at Oxford University and on the radio and wrote . He later founded Trabuco College as a center for spiritual studies. As Gerald Heard, he wrote philosophical works such as and . Under the name H.F. Heard, he wrote mysteries. The collection consists of Heard's manuscripts of published and unpublished books, correspondence, tape recordings of Heard's lectures, lecture notes, articles, books from Heard's library, photographs, and ephemera. It also includes manuscripts by others as well as an oil painting of Heard by Aldous Huxley (1933).

Donald Kalish (December 4, 1919-June 8, 2000) was UCLA professor of philosophy and indefatigable critic of U.S. foreign policy in countries from Southeast Asia to Central America. The collection consists of philosophy course materials, correspondence and scrapbooks that contain detailed information on: University Committee on Vietnam, Peace Action Council, Vietnam War protests, firing and retention of Angela Davis, Concerned Faculty of UCLA.

Collection consists of printed and manuscript materials on the teaching of philosophy in France, bound in four old leather volumes.

Robin Ruth Linden is a writer and sociologist whose research has explored women's health, the politics of technomedicine, the Holocaust, reflexive ethnography and life histories. Notes, release forms and funding for the production of Feminism and Science - a video produced by Robin Ruth Linden are included, as are documents relating to the Feminism and the Philosophy of Science Conference, which served as the video's inspiration.

Richard Montague was a mathematician, theorist and UCLA Professor of Philosophy, known as the namesake behind Montague Grammar theory of natural language semantics. The collection consists of correspondence, lecture notes, research notes, and personal materials relating to Montague’s role as an organist.

Charles Kay Ogden (1889-1957) was an English linguist, philosopher, and writer. Ogden published The meaning of meaning (1923), which set forth principles for the understanding of the function of language. In 1922, he became editor of the international psychological journal Psyche, and used it as a vehicle for publishing research on international language problems. Later, Ogden developed what he termed Basic English to be used as an international language of 850 words. The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, periodicals, and books. Materials relate to Basic English, the Orthological Institute, and Psyche, and include manuscripts and copies of books by Ogden, as well as many of the books published in Basic English by various authors.

Oreste Francesco Pucciani was born in Cleveland in 1916, the son of an Italian immigrant. He received his BA from Case Western Reserve in 1939 and his PhD from Harvard in 1943. In 1948 he joined the UCLA faculty, where he taught until his retirement in 1979. Pucciani was best known as an interpreter of the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre. Among his many works on Sartre's existentialism, the most notable is the long entry on Sartre, in Gallimard's Histoire de la Philosophie in the Encyclopédie de la Pléïade, France's most prestigious publication series. At UCLA Pucciani pioneered the teaching of courses on Sartre before the philosopher's works were translated into English. He was also a theorist and developer of methods of language acquisition, and in the late 1950s, Pucciani pioneered the "direct method" of language teaching in the UCLA French Department's language program. In 1967 he embodied the results of the department's experience with the direct method in a highly successful and influential textbook, Langue et Langage, coauthored with Jacqueline Hamel. In 1965 the French government recognized Pucciani's dedication to French philosophy, language, and culture with the award of the Knight's Cross of the Legion of Honor. For many years he was the partner of Rudi Gernreich, the noted fashion designer, until his death in 1986. Collection consists of correspondence, academic files, clipping files and personal ephemera.

Josiah Royce (1855-1916) was a professor of philosophy at the University of California at Berkeley and Harvard University. His published works include: Primer of Logical Analysis for the Use of Composition Students (1881), The Religious Aspect of Philosophy (1885) and The Spirit of Modern Philosophy (1892). The collection consists of writings by and about Josiah Royce, copies of his correspondence, books, clippings and photographs.

F.C.S. Schiller (1864-1937) was a pragmatist philosopher. He was the president of the Aristotelian Society (1921), and was elected fellow of the British Academy (1926). The collection consists of manuscripts of published books and articles, correspondence, documents, photographs, and ephemera related to Schiller's life and professional career.

The collection consists of 2816 pamphlets and books on twentieth century socialist and labor movements around the world, with particular emphasis on communist, socialist, and collectivist political parties and organizations in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, United Kingdom, and United States of America.
