This Education Research Guide is intended as a starting place for UCLA researchers, pointing to resources and strategies for finding information about Education topics and sources.

Research Groups, Institutes, Government

Alliance for Early Success. National nonprofit working with early childhood policy advocates at the state level to ensure that each child, 0-8 years, has an equal opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. See What We Do and Resource Centers.

American Pediatrics Association, APA. Professional organization of 67,000 pediatricians committed to optimal physical, mental, and social health and well-being for infants through young adults.​

Brookings Institute. Nonprofit public policy group based in Washington, DC, whose mission is to conduct in-depth research that leads to new ideas for solving problems facing society at the local, national and global level. Major topics: Education and Social Issues: Children and Families.

California Department of Education: Safe Schools. Training, resources and technical assistance to establish a school/community environment which is physically and emotionally safe, well disciplined, and conducive to learning.

Center on the Developing Child. Multidisciplinary research center at Harvard University committed to driving science-based innovation in policy and practice. 

Center for Law and Social Policy, CLASP. National, nonpartisan, anti-poverty nonprofit advancing policy solutions for low-income people to reduce poverty, promote economic opportunity, and address barriers faced by people of color.

Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Healthy Schools: Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child. The student-centered WSCC model is CDC’s framework to address health in schools, emphasizing the role of community support. The CDC also has general Covid-19 info.

Child and Family Blog. International nonprofit reports leading research re how the family influences child development, both social/emotional and cognitive, and implications for policy and practice relating to children and families.

Child Trends. Leading U.S. research organization focused on improving the lives of children and youth, especially the most vulnerable. See Research, includes a Covid-19 section. 

Children Now. Nonprofit with a whole-child approach for policy development for a wide range of key children’s issues, prenatal through age 26. Has Covid-19 Resources section.

Children’s Defense Fund. Growing from the Civil Rights Movement, the CDF seeks to end child poverty, give every child a healthy start, a quality early childhood experience, a level education playing field, and safe families and communities free from violence. See News & Resources, includes Covid.

Economic Policy Institute, EPI. Nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank created in 1986 to focus on the needs of low- and middle-income workers in economic policy discussions. See Areas of Research, PublicationsResources and more.

First 5 California. Distributes funds to local communities through the state’s 58 individual counties, all of which have created their own local First 5 County Commissions. Funds are used to address the local needs of communities statewide.

Future of Children. The Princeton School of Public & International Affairs and the Brookings Institution collaborate to translate the best social science research about children and youth into info useful to policymakers, practitioners, et al. See Publications

Kids Data: Data & Resources about the Health of Children. Find data about the health and well being of children in communities across California via sections by Topic, Region, Demographic, Data in Action, and News.

National Association for the Education of Young Children, NAEYC. Professional membership group promoting high-quality early learning for all young children, birth through age 8, by connecting early childhood practice, policy, and research. See Our Work and Resources

National Center for Children in Poverty, NCCP. Nonpartisan, public interest research group at Columbia University conducting research and translating findings into actionable recommendations that advocates and policymakers use to improve the lives and futures of low-income children and their families. National Center for Homeless Education, NCHE. Operates the U.S. Dept of Education's technical assistance and info center for the federal Education for Homeless Children and Youth (EHCY) Program. See Resources, Legislation, Data, Topics, and Covid-19.

Pew Research Center. Nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about issues, attitudes and trends shaping the world. Conducts public opinion polling, demographic research, content analysis and other data-driven social science research.

Rand Corporation. Research group that develops solutions to public policy challenges to help make communities throughout the world safer and more secure, healthier and more prosperous. See Research, Latest Insights, and Policy Experts

UNICEF USA (United Nations Institute for Children's Educational Fund). Supports UNICEF's work and other efforts in support of the world's children, through fundraising, advocacy and education in the United States. Within Our Mission, look at Saving Lives, Building Futures, Emergency Relief, and Initiatives.

U.S. Census Bureau. The Census Bureau's mission is to serve as the nation’s leading provider of quality data about its people and economy. Storehouse of searchable data and reports.

Urban Institute. Nonprofit research organization that is a trusted source for unbiased, authoritative insights that inform consequential choices about the well-being of people and places in the United States. See Research, Experts, Policy Centers and more.
