Powell Community Collections

Collections that support the growth, wellness, and interests of UCLA students.

Access to Print Resources (as of 3/20/20)

As part of UCLA's transition to remote instruction, and the Library's necessary decision to close all Library locations, access to print resources and special collections is not available. Please take advantage of electronic resources such as ebooks and article databases. The UCLA community can connect to these online resources off-campus via the VPN or proxy server. Interlibrary loan is still available for electronic journal articles; however, ebooks cannot be borrowed on interlibrary loan. You can also temporarily access digitized print books via HathiTrust.

The library is also extending access to our print collection beyond what's available in HathiTrust through the Pilot Emergency Temporary Digititzation on Request Service (PETDOR). Please review the PETDOR FAQ for guidance on using this service.

For help with any of our resources, please schedule an appointment with a librarian (audio/video Zoom appointments available), contact your subject librarian directly, or use our 24/7 chat service.

What Are the Community Collections?

The Community Collections are designed to support and promote student intellectual growth, health and wellbeing, and creativity. Reflecting the diversity of the student population, the collections aim to foster curiosity about the world and empathy for others, while nurturing lifelong reading habits.

Currently, the following collections make up the Community Collections:

Even if you're not a member of one of the student groups listed above, there are ways for you to get involved with the collection. Click here for more information!

And, of course, we always welcome suggestions for new titles. If there's a book or zine you want that we don't have, email us!

Recent Fiction is a browsable collection of newly-released titles. Librarian: Ashley Peterson

The Science Fiction & Fantasy collection, which contains books and comics, has been built and curated by members of Enigma, the Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Gaming group at UCLA. In 2013, the collection was given to Powell Library in order to broaden its access to the UCLA community. Librarian: Simon Lee

The Graphic Literature collection includes a broad selection of titles reflecting the evolution of the genre from early twentieth-century comics through twenty-first century graphic fiction and non-fiction. It also includes a limited amount of manga in translation. Librarian: Sylvia Page

The Zine collection consists of zines (low-budget, self-published works of prose, poetry, or art) that promote student creativity, leisure reading, and self-publishing. Although the collection contains zines from across the US, special attention is paid to Los Angeles area zines and zines created by UCLA students or alumni. Librarian: Sylvia Page
