"One of my all time favorite books is "Earth Abides" by George R. Stewart in 1949: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_Abides
It is one of the earliest post-apocalyptic novels ever written, and is quite good. It follows a Berkeley ecology graduate student after a disease wipes out almost all of mankind. It was inspired by the great influenza outbreak of 1919 and focuses on how animals respond to the removal of humans and how humans reform into tribal groups. It really is the basis of so many other novels like "The Stand" that followed later, that I believe are much inferior."
An instant classic upon its original publication in 1949 and winner of the first International Fantasy Award, Earth Abides ranks with On the Beach and Riddley Walker as one of our most provocative and finely wrought post-apocalyptic works of literature. Its impact is still fresh, its lessons timeless.
