Subject Headings

Most academic libraries use Library of Congress subject headings to describe books and other materials in their collections. While these headings standardize subjects across titles, they are historically both contentious and reductive when considering race/ethnicity, sexuality, gender, and other categories related to identity. Paying attention to headings can help you both interrogate institutional biases and erasures, but also to identify works related to your topic grouped under those headings. Below are some examples.
