Library Special Collections holdings on African Americans include significant collections which reveal the influence of individuals, organizations and institutions and their role in the development of Los Angeles.
Augustus F. Hawkins Papers, 1935-1990 consists of materials documenting Hawkins' service as a U.S. Congressman, 1963-90, Chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee,1984-90 and a small portion related to his term as California State Assemblyman, 1935-1963.
Los Angeles Urban League Records, 1933-1945 consist of correspondence and papers relating to African Americans, immigrant labor and problems of social planning in Los Angeles.
Diane E. Watson Papers, 1978-2011 the collection of this former US 33rd district congresswoman, California state senator, ambassador to Micronesia, and Los Angeles United School District board member contains press clippings, a sizable collection of photographs, correspondence, and various documents.
