Every now and then I'm asked by a student, someone clearly frustrated after spending hours doing library research, why the whole process is so hard. Leaving aside the obvious answer—UCLA wouldn't be giving you a college degree for learning to do this if it were easy—the answer usually comes down to a number of mistaken assumptions about how academic libraries really work. Faculty and librarians rarely explain these "big picture" things, not because they're trying to hide these facts, but because they've been living with them for so long they're just part of the background.
