Finding Historical Film Reviews

Newspapers are a good resource for finding historical film reviews.

Click on the link below to access the Los Angeles Times and New York Times historical databases.

Search for your film by putting the name of the film in quotes, e.g. "Sunset Boulevard" and adding the word "review" to the search. Limit the date range to the year before the movie was released to the year after.

Finding Academic Articles

This database contain articles in scholarly journals, newspapers, and popular publications. If you need an academic article, be sure to limit the results to "Peer-Reviewed Journal Articles."

Other Digitized Primary Sources

Los Angeles Newspapers

Newspapers are a good resource for seeing how issues were covered in the contemporary media. To get to the Los Angeles Times, click on the first link below.

For ethnic newspapers, searching Ethnic NewsWatch: A History (see link below) will also get you a variety of articles, although the page images are not there—only the text.

Some newspapers, such as La opinión and Rafu Shimpo have not been digitized and you have to go to the Charles E. Young Research Library A-Level to read the microform.
