Comm Studies Sources

To Google or Not to Google?

The Internet has brought a vast array of information to your desktop.  The challenge for students is to identify the relevant sources, get to them easily, and critically evaluate their content.  Some of the websites listed on the other tabs in this guide are licensed for UC users only, others are open to all.  Those that are licensed will not turn up in a Google search.

This guide will lead you to resources that can help you find material for your assignments. Remember that you can always ask a reference librarian for help.

Connect from Off-Campus or via Wireless On-Campus

Most of the links on these pages go to subscription sources which are accessible from any computer on campus. All campus wireless networks (eduroam, UCLA_WIFI, or UCLA_WEB) provide access to online subscription content.

UCLA students, faculty, and staff can access these sites from off-campus using either the Bruin Online Proxy Server (a simple setting in your browser) or the UCLA VPN Client (a program you install on your computer). To set up an iPAD, follow the instructions for the iPhone. You can also get access through UCLA mobile.

[NOTE: If you are using a Mac, you may need to use Firefox, not Safari, to read some of the pdf material.]

    Pros and Cons

    CQ Researcher
Single-themed CQ Researcher reports offers in-depth, non-biased coverage of political and social issues, with regular reports on topics in health, international affairs, education, the environment, technology and the U.S. economy.

    Opposing Viewpoints
This series collects differing perspectives on contemporary issues. To find a book in the series, search in the UCLA Library Catalog for the issue and the phrase "opposing viewpoints." For example:

These major journals are not included in CIOS. The catalog will link to an online version if we have access to it. Otherwise you can look at the print issues in the library.
