Chicano Studies Research Center Library

What Are Subject Files?

What are they? Subject Files (also referred to as vertical files) are essential files that were created in 1969 and have since, over the years, been added to, to create quick historical references to any given subject. As the Librarians found sources that could provide useful for research in certain subjects, they went collecting. They include articles, programs, flyers, letters--anything related to a specific person, organization, place, or event. This way, it would be easier for researchers to jump start their research, and get an idea of what was out there. While the library no longer adds to these files, they still serve their purpose as a research collection and starting point for students and researchers. There are also interesting items that otherwise might not have ever been saved. The files are located on site, in the library (144 Haines). For assistance in using the subject files, please contact the Librarian.
